I know what you are thinking, a material made of timber in a shower? There’s no way! This is a common first reaction when one learns about Fibo - the leading 100% waterproof wall panel system. That being said, upon learning about the durability, reliability, and versatility of this product - it may be on your next remodel list!
Product Overview
FIBO wall panels have a core made of PEFC certified timber and is compressed with high-pressure laminate. This membrane at the front of the panel is 100% watertight and eco-friendly. One way to describe the product is “LVT for your wall.” The planks click together similar to the way any LVT floor would. This system is referred to as “Aqualock” which has seams that are practically invisible to the naked eye. There are a variety of sizes designed for different kitchens, bathrooms, or wet rooms. These panels are long lasting and durable. In fact, they come with a 15-year warranty, and with the membrane in the front you never have to worry about damage to your wall. You can install Fibo directly on to sheetrock or in some cases, even over your existing tile.
History
While FIBO may sound revolutionary to the world of remodeling here in the United States, it is by no means a new product. It was invented, designed, and produced in Norway, and has been installed there for over 50 years. With a modest beginning in 1952, FIBO started off in a small factory in Southern Norway. Today it operates a multi-million pound and award-winning factory which produces panels for over 100,000 bathrooms a year! FIBO is now the leading supplier of plywood waterproof wall panels across Europe and is taking the market here in the United States by storm!
Installation
In a nutshell, the FIBO wall system consists of three parts - wall panels, profiles, and accessories. As previously mentioned, the wall panels are made up of a high-pressure laminate surface with a plywood core, all secured with a moisture barrier. The panels can be screwed directly to studs or even glued to the existing wall. There is no need for backing boards, chipboard, or excessive preparation!
In fact, the system does not require plaster, vapor barriers, or grouting. This makes Fibo about a third of the cost of tile, and much easier to install. Each system has a range of profiles that make it 100% waterproof. FIBO also provides a range of accessories that aid in easy and efficient installation and keep your wall panels in excellent shape for decades!
Design
Whether you are looking for a new urban look or a rustic charm, FIBO has a plethora of designs to fit your style. The stunning designs allow you to choose between several colors and finishes including marbles, stones, and woods in tile and panel patterns. They fit virtually every kitchen backsplash or bathroom, and you can choose to have it free-standing or wrap around our current bathtub. Check out a few of my favorite designs below!
